Beckley is a place all too familiar with Charleston Catholic Boys Soccer. However, it has not been the nicest place to the team. For six straight years, the boys have made the trip down there, only to come back after a loss. For the 2021 State Tournament, things switched up a bit. Coach Joe Johns, in his first year as head coach, led the team to their first title in six years, in some exciting fashion, as well. For the first round, the boys faced Fairmont Senior, a familiar matchup for the Irish. One year ago, they were knocked off by Fairmont in the 2020 State Championship. Things changed this year, as the Irish got the win 2-1 victory in a thriller. Fairmont started off with a quick goal to go up 1-0, but that was all they could get. In the second half, the ball made its way in the back of the net for the Irish with an own goal by Fairmont from a scramble in the box. The game stayed tied 1-1 up until the 78th minute when Eli Coleman rocketed a shot to the top right corner for the game winner. If you think that game is a lot, the state final was decided off of a sudden death goal in overtime against Point Pleasant. On Saturday, the Irish found themselves back in another State Final for a rematch of a previous loss this season. Earlier in the season, the Irish were shut down 4-1 by Point Pleasant. Things changed this time though as the Irish got the 4-3 victory when it mattered. It started off with a quick 2-0 lead when Sully Groom and Billy Ford collected goals. Eventually, Point Pleasant got a goal to make it 2-1. That is when Sam Delgra countered off of a free kick and put the Irish up 3-1. Point Pleasant would eventually grab two more goals to tie the match, one coming in the last minute of regulation. Overtime went for what seemed like a while until, guess who, Sully Groom netted the game winner off a corner kick sent in from Sam Delgra. This was the 6th State Championship in program history and the drought was finally broken. Congratulations Boys!
